HASHTAGCHOICES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
So we teamed up with some very creative parents and school counselors to develop a program titled hashtagchoices, an interactive presentation that encourages some deep thinking about the choices we make and their possible consequences.
Along with the Presentation, a letter is sent home to the parents, informing them of their child's participation and inviting them to create a "teachable moment" by reviewing what the child thought about the program and what they learned as well.
Dear Elementary School,
During this week, South Mountain School will be presenting a program called “hashtagchoices” to your Elementary School Student.
Hashtagchoices was started when many parents asked how we can reach younger children without raising issues that no elementary school student should ever be thinking about. Our program uses many of the most excepted, and evidence based, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) principles. At its core, hashtagchoices offers a safe learning space for children to have social and emotional skills presented to and modeled for them.
Hashtagchoices is a powerpoint presentation tailored specifically for Elementary School students to help raise awareness around the consequences of the choices they make. The scenarios your student was presented with are, Bullying, Self-Esteem, Do’s and Don'ts of Social Media, Resolving Conflict, Time Management & Organization, Equality, Integrity, and Transition from Elementary School to Middle School.
Every scenario defines what consequences are, and we discuss both easy choices and difficult choices and how best to arrive at making those choices. The presentation aims to emphasize that choices do not need to be made alone-parents, teachers, school counselors, and even friends can be called upon to help them make good, intelligent choices.

I encourage you to review the website as it has many resources for parents and students.
I am hopeful that this experience will serve as a springboard for further dialogue at home.
